Abstract

This collection documents the fate of several members of the Jewish-German Heymann family during the Holocaust, and includes photographs and copies of documents detailing their deportations and deaths.

Biographical/Historical note

Anni Heymann Fuchs was a cousin of the family whose fate is described in this collection. Ms. Fuchs survived the Holocaust, and died in the mid 1970s, leaving this collection to her cousin Monica Werner. Ms. Werner was born in Berlin, Germany on April 4, 1926 and escaped Nazi Germany in March 1941.

Clara Gossels Heymann was born in Crossen, Germany on May 12, 1883. At the time of the Holocaust she was widowed. She had two daughters. Her daughter Edith was born March 20, 1907, in Berlin; and her daughter Hilde was born August 7, 1912 in Berlin. Hilde married Heinz Traugott, born July 25, 1901 in Berlin, and their daughter Brigitte (Gitta) was born on October 1, 1941 in Berlin. Heinz Traugott was deported on January 29, 1943, and the remaining members of the immediate family were deported on February 19, 1943, to Auschwitz, where they perished.

Another cousin, Cilly Ruhm Mendelsohn, born in 1912 in Berlin, was arrested with her husband in August 1942 in Nice, France, deported to Auschwitz and perished in 1942. Her exact fate is not known. Hedwig Ruhm, who sent a postcard from Theresienstadt to Anni (Heymann) Fuchs, was deported to Theresisenstadt with her husband. Other family members, including siblings and nieces of Clara Heymann, were also deported from Berlin in December 1942 and January 1943, and perished.

Custodial History note

This collection of photographs was donated to the Bay Area Holocaust Oral History Project by Stacey Descoteaux, a volunteer, who was given them by Holocaust survivor Monica Werner, who had inherited them from her cousin Anni Heymann Fuchs. The Bay Area Holocaust Oral History Project merged with the Holocaust Center of Northern California in 2007; the Holocaust Center of Northern California became part of Jewish Family and Children’s Services of San Francisco, the Peninsula, Marin and Sonoma Counties in December 2010.
