Movie Night: Three Brothers In Shanghai
Join Congregation Sherith Israel and the JFCS Holocaust Center for a special evening marking the 88th anniversary of Kristallnacht, featuring a screening of Three Brothers in Shanghai, a 17-minute documentary by Bay Area filmmaker Nick Andrus.
The film tells the true story of three Jewish brothers who escaped Nazi Austria as children and found refuge in Shanghai—one of the only places in the world where Jewish refugees could enter without visas. Drawing on their firsthand memories, it offers an intimate portrait of family, resilience, and survival during the Holocaust.
Following the screening, Andrus will join Ron Glait, Director of Community Education at the JFCS Holocaust Center, for a conversation on the making of the film, the history of Jewish refugees in Shanghai, and the importance of preserving and sharing firsthand Holocaust testimony for future generations.
The evening will also include a special display of artifacts from the JFCS Holocaust Center archives, drawn from its collections documenting Jewish life and refugee experience in Shanghai.
Join us for an evening of film, history, and conversation as we honor the memory of Kristallnacht and trace the journey of Jewish refugees who found safety in Shanghai and, later, built new lives in San Francisco.
