Biography

Absent supporting biographical material, this biography is drawn from the documents themselves.

Benjamin Braun was born in Podwoloczyska, Poland on June 11, 1894. At the time of the issuance of these documents, he was living in Vienna, Austria. His occupation is listed in the passport as Privater.

In March 1938, Germany annexed Austria (the Anschluss). When Austria became part of Greater Germany, its citizens became subject to laws existing in Nazi Germany. Austrian Jews were therefore subject to all of Nazi Germany’s racial laws, and suffered deprivation of rights, persecution and confiscation of property. Vast numbers of Austrian Jews like Benjamin Braun sought to emigrate. Mr. Braun left Vienna in May 1941, and arrived in Ellis Island, New York on July 29, 1941, after transit through Spain and Portugal.

Collection Scope and Content summary

The collection is comprised of two identification documents issued by the Nazi government of Austria in 1940. The passport and Arbeitsbuch reflect the Nazi government practice of requiring Jewish men to take the legal name of Israel. Thus, both documents are issued to Benjamin Israel Braun. The passport is also stamped with a red “J.”
