Biographical/Historical note

David Low was born in Dunedin, New Zealand on April 7, 1891 and died in London on September 19, 1963.

Mr. Low was educated in Christchurch, New Zealanda. His first cartoon was published in 1902. He worked as a professional cartoonist at various newspaper in Australia until 1919 when he moved to London to work at the London Star (1919-1927). In 1927 he joined the staff of the Evening Standard, where he worked until 1950. Later he was with the Daily Herald, and lastly, beginning in 1952, with the Manchester Guardian.

It was while he was at the Evening Standard that Low created his famous character, “Colonel Blimp,” a reactionary and xenophobic character, in 1932. During World War II his cartoons were regarded as anti-Fascist and anti-Nazi, and Mr. Low was famous for his satirical cartoons of Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini. As a consequence, his work was banned in Germany and Italy.

Low became an official British War Artist and in this role attended the Nuremberg War Trials.
