History

The Netherlands was occupied by Nazi forces in May 1940. A civil administration was installed, under Schutzstaffel (SS) auspices, which existed side-by-side with a Dutch administration. Beginning in late 1940, anti-Jewish measures were instituted to deprive Jewish citizens of their rights, to marginalize the Jewish community, and to confiscate its property. Deportations of Dutch Jews to concentration camps began in 1942. Over 100,000 Dutch Jews perished during the Holocaust.
