Biographical/Historical note
Nazi Germany invaded Greece in April 1941, and Thessalonike (Salonica) was part of the occupied zone. Leaders of Salonica’s Jewish community were arrested, homes and properties were immediately confiscated, and the community’s cultural possessions were plundered. In February 1943, German authorities established two ghettos, and between March and August 1943, 45,000 Jewish citizens of Salonica were deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau, where most perished. The Jewish community of Salonica was devastated during the Holocaust. Its population of 50,000, pre-war, was reduced to 2000 after the war ended.
Scope and Contents note
The collection comprises a single document dated March 1, 1943. The document is addressed to the Jewish community of Thessaloniki, Greece and provides clarifications concerning the declaration of wealth required by the occupying Nazi authorities.
The document, in printed Ladino, states that the declaration of wealth is for statistical purposes only but warns the community that false statements will lead to harsh punishment by German authorities. The head of household is required to fill out the declaration, and the assets that need to be declared include real estate, merchandise, machinery, bank deposits, jewelry, household goods, works or art, furniture, and vehicles.
