Danuta, Tadeusz, Józef, and Władysława Kintzel, ca. 1930s

Danuta (Diana) Kintzel, one of the main subjects of this exhibition, is standing on the right in this photograph. Her brother, Tadeusz, is to her left and her parents, Józef and Władysława, are seated below. Danuta’s older sister, Krystyna, is not pictured here.

Both of Danuta’s siblings were supportive when, in the middle of the war, she fell in love with Stanley Steyer. Stanley was a young Jewish man living with a false identity on the “Aryan” side of Warsaw. The Kintzel family was Catholic. Danuta’s siblings were well aware that her interfaith marriage posed a risk to the entire family. Nevertheless, Danuta’s sister and brother both attended her wedding in September 1943. Tadeusz in particular became an ally to Stanley and Danuta in their efforts to save Jews during the Holocaust. The Kintzel family has yet to be honored as “righteous among the nations.”
