Prison Release Document

In July 1944, Stanley and Diana Steyer were arrested and imprisoned in Tarnow, Poland. They were beaten and tortured, and detained for about a month. Diana was twenty-two years old, and pregnant with her first child. Due to the beatings, she lost the baby by miscarriage.

This slip of paper (in German) documents Diana’s release from prison. She appears here as Anna Maria Krzeminska, a false name and identity that she had adopted while doing the dangerous work of helping to support Jews in hiding. The birthdate and birthplace listed on the document–October 5, 1918 in Wilno (Vilna)–are also elements of the false identity. Diana was born on August 5, 1921, in the town of Bydgoszcz.
